Strong Delusion
“And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie” (2Thess. 2:11)

Last Thursday friends of ours took us to see a play in Stratford called Grand Magic. It was a fascinating story of a washed-up magician that is able to fool a very proud, prominent, elite figure into believing something that simply was not true. Through a series of lies and deception the deceived one was so convinced that the lie was true, that when the truth was eventually revealed, he chose to believe the lie over the truth and ended up rejecting the very thing he loved most, his wife. It was one of those plays filled with drama, suspense and comedy, and although was very intriguing at the time, led me to ponder and pursue what the playwright was really trying to communicate. Having studied numerous French plays and writings in my university years, I was well aware that theatre was a means for commonfolk to express social truths in a concealed manner, under the radar of the ruling elite. For instance, some scholars say that the book of Revelation and all its imagery is very much a critique of the 1st century Roman Empire. From the program handed to us at the theatre door, there is an interesting caption from a description of the plot: “Grand Magic was written in the years after World War II, a time when the supposed bedrock truths and realities of Italy’s fascist era were exposed as tawdry lies and delusions.” Actually, the play’s promotional poster has this line on it: “what the heart desires, the mind believes”; in other words, “it’s not a lie if you believe it”. Friends, we are living in very dangerous times! What used to be bedrock truths are being propagated as dangerous ideologies that threaten rapidly changing social norms. As I read 2Thessalonians 2, my question has always been, “will we be able to tell when the delusion has hit us, and people choose to believe the lie?” From my observation, we are there! And if we are there, then we need to cling to the truths we have always believed with all of our hearts – I am speaking of bedrock biblical truth, which is being challenged on every front, even by church leaders!
Many so-called Christians have chosen to bury their head in the sand and ignore what is happening in our world. How can we be silent when basic truths like “God created them male and female” and “marriage is between a man and a woman” are being turned upside down. There are only two genders! Anything else is a lie! But now, through some strong delusion, that basic truth is no longer believed. Here’s what the bible teaches…Satan is a liar and the father of lies (John 8:44). It also teaches that when we stop believing God and His word, we create a god in our own image who permits the sins we want to commit. When we exchange the truth for a lie, we end up totally satisfying the desires of our heart, believing that those desires are the truth. If you want proof, read Romans 1:18-32.
What are the signs that we are under strong delusion according to 2Thessalonians 2: apostasy and rebellion (people defecting from the Biblical God and the true faith); lawlessness (people doing what is right in their own eyes); delusion (people not wanting to receive the truth even when it is communicated, because they have chosen to believe the lie). Paul’s exhortation to saints is to: “stand firm and hold to the teachings and traditions passed on to us” (2Thess. 2:15). Stand and hold to what you were taught – don’t follow the crowd being led to judgment (2Thess. 2:12).
Now friends, we are living in a world where we don’t know what to believe regarding certain issues. We are being lied to continuously by those who say they are leading us towards the best, for our own good. Yet, the world has never been in such chaos! Are “climate change” and “global warming” real issues or just lies to get us to comply with global agendas for world dominion? How will we know? How do we know if what is called a “conspiracy” is actually the truth that the ruling elite do not want us to find out? If you want people to continue believing your lie, communicate that the truth is a conspiracy, and that the elite’s truth will “save your existence and livelihood for years to come”. The motivation for compliance is always fear based, not truth based. In my Bible, floods, fires and earthquakes are all signs of God’s judgment because people, His people, have turned from Him to follow other gods – they are not signs of climate change – God controls the climate. Since we have exchanged the truth for a lie, we, including the church, can’t even see the obvious – the world is under judgment for rejecting God and His truth. Very few preachers will state the obvious. Yet, you cannot read the Book of Revelation without seeing how God acts in history past and what is waiting for the planet in the future. Are we there? Is God trying to wake us up?
The delusion is getting worse! Mainstream media lies to us constantly. True scientific evidence is being concealed and falsified science is replacing it and being propagated as truth. Our history is being ripped from under our feet and labelled “racist hate”. The masses are being brainwashed and the naysayers are being silenced, arrested, charged and jailed. The god of this age is having a field day with the minds of our children and young people. As he controls the minds and lying mouths of our global leaders whose only agenda is to set up “a new world order” under the Antichrist, the church seems asleep in the light. The activity of satan carries with it all power and signs and false wonders, so that people believe him over God (2Thess. 2:9). Deception is running rampant, and very few preachers are exposing it. It is time for the church of Jesus Christ to wake up, be alert, stand firm, and unify under the truth of God’s word. I see more secular leaders trying to expose the truth than I do church leaders. As Jesus exhorted the churches in Revelation to wake up, repent and return to our first love, so must we now do the same. We must get rid of the false prophets that are “leading my bond-servants astray” with their deluding influences, and hold fast to Jesus and His word. Expose the lies and preach the truth…at any cost! “Thy word is truth!” (John 17:17) “The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever” (Isa. 40:8). “For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished” (Matt. 5:18). God’s truth wins and satan ends up in the lake of fire! Choose truth, not the delusion!
